OBEY: The Art of Shepard Fairey is a tribute to the artist’s 35-year career. It is a visual and conceptual journey that unfolds in an itinerary specially designed for the Fabbrica del Vapore, presenting a rich collection of works. Obey has personally selected for this occasion a body of work among the most significant of his artistic production, including numerous unique and previously unseen pieces.
PROPAGANDA, PEACE AND JUSTICE, MUSIC, ENVIRONMENT and NEW WORKS are the five sections into which the Milan exhibition is divided, representing some of the most significant themes of Shepard Fairey’s artistic research.
From the beginnings of the 1989 Obey sticker campaign to the most recent works, the museum collection shows the American street artist’s personal vision and invites the public to reflect and take a stand on current issues of great relevance.
Shepard Fairey (Charleston, 1970) is the artist behind Obey, a world-renowned street artist whose artworks have become icons of the fight against social, environmental and civil injustice. His career began in 1989 with the sticker campaign André The Giant Has a Posse and peaked in 2008 with the work HOPE, a portrait of Barack Obama that has become an emblem of the presidential campaign. His works are characterised by an essential style and a minimalist palette. Influenced by punk-rock culture, which taught the artist to question social conventions, Obey has painted more than 130 murals on six continents.
“When I look at humanity in general, most people want to live in peace. The majority of my art focuses on issues of justice, and an outcome of improved justice is a more equal, fair, and peaceful society. Through my art, I want to remind people of the equal humanity of all people, regardless of their race, religion, nation, or culture. There is no us versus them; there is only us. ”
